Twenty two specimens of petrified palm wood from gravel beds ofQuaternary period in the area of Nakhon Ratchasima province were studied. Bycomparison with modern palm wood anatomical characteristics, they werecategorized into 4 groups; 1) Borasseae tribe, CORYPHOIDEAE subfamily 2)Trachycarpeae tribe, CORYPHOIDEAE subfamily 3) Corypheae tribe,CORYPHOIDEAE subfamily and 4) ARECOIDEAE subfamily. The results indicate thatthey have been distributed in Thailand since 800,000 years ago. The fact that thesepalm groups are still found living in Thailand suggests that they have always existedin the area. The existence of these palm groups also implies that Thailand hadtropical to subtropical climate during the Quaternary period.
