Younger kinematic history of the Khlong Marui Fault Zone based on paleoseismological investigations

บทคัดย่อ
The Khlong Mauri Fault Zone (KMFZ) in Southern Thailand is well known since early geological mapping; it is of strike-slip nature and aligned parallel to the Ranong Fault Zone, which is located further north. The Khlong Marui Fault Zone initially moved 150 km sinistral, and then moved right lateral at the transition of Jurassic and Cretaceous. Until the 9.1 Sumatra Andaman Earthquake in 2004 the KMFZ was believed to be dormant, thus not seismically active. However, earthquake measurements in 2005 have shown that the KMFZ is an active fault zone. Parallel to that significant work was done on the metamorphic western part of the KMFZ resulting in complex kinematic models until an age of 23 Ma. This study has revealed in the eastern part of the Khlong Marui Fault Zone much younger extensional and compressional features, often a few thousand years old or younger as shown by paleoseismological investigations. In this area the KMFZ is cutting through large mainly N-S or NNW-SSE oriented larger extensional zones, which are much older, started in Miocence/Oligocene. This tectonics situation created quite complex features, compressional and extensional, which can be explained through a differential stress regime with the main axis N-S and E-W, thus reflecting the general current stress regime in this area. Large subduction zone earthquake as well as larger earthquakes in the Myanmar/China region can have an influence on the overall stress pattern.
